Lighting PlusFlash Photography Techniques - Ambient Light Plus Flash

With judicious use of Flash, you can make your photo looks natural as if no flash was used, it will introduce to improve the image further reducing contrast and yet looking very natural.

It has been a dream of all photographers looking for balance in lighting whenever they photograph a subject and mostly the quality of available light is not always perfect. I will share my experience in the use of flash wisely I am able to enhance my photo rather than just using the ambient light.

Before you start let me clarify a few things regarding my flash photography techniques that I will share with you.

  • Let me define the term flash in the paper - it is what some call "flash" that complements the flash mounted on the camera hot - the type of shoes and not the type of flash studio flash or pop-up flash built into the camera ..

  • Techniques of flash photography, I am writing in this article are applicable for most on-the-ground "or" moving "and not photography studio photography.

  • I am a user of Nikon D-SLR and flash a few examples of my photography work shown here are not a standard recipe as each camera system may be a blade of different readings therefore require some adjustments to slides.

Ambient light over flash

I use flash most of the time, but using the flash does not mean that you spoil the ambient light which makes the photo looking nature cons. Why just use the light available only if your photo turns out to be horrible. I'll show you in understanding essential techniques, mixing ambient light with flash you can get a better picture.

When using the flash, I'll be able to highlight the gray areas and avoid shadows under the eyebrows of the subject which makes a better picture of what it would have been without a flash. But this does not mean that the image will end up flat. Make sure you get your right to read.

Let's try two examples:

1. A wedding couple on a beach under a tent as the sun goes down: -

  • Shoot in manual mode because you need to be in control of your exposure meter for accuracy and consistency.

  • Meter for ambient light, get your exposure right, turn off the flash and take a test shot. With proper exposure, you get a perfect natural combination, but the newlyweds will be less exposed or with shadows around their faces.

  • Now turn on your flash and set the flash with TTL-BL, which automatically balances flash with ambient light (as I am about Nikon). Adjust your flash compensation. Top 0 EV compensation and slowly climb to more than 1.7 eV. How much is enough? There is no correct answer to this because it depends how much you need Flash to use as a fill in flash. In this example, you probably need to build a fill-flash to match the background sunny.

Flash has been disabled. I took the reading of the ambient light and took a test shot. Satisfied with the overall exposure, then my flash light and took the photo below with my flashlight firring direct and dial up my flash at +1.7 EV. Photographter See below for comparison.

2. Portrait of a couple against a wall

  • Again always shoot manual mode.
