Is it allowed to put leather coats inside plastic garment bags for storage of summer? I heard somewhere that this is not a good idea.
No, it's a terrible idea. If you want leather store, you must first clean and dry well .... no sweat or condensation, no food spills left on it. Then, treat the leather with a good leather conditioning cream. Place it in a breathable garment bag, preferably cotton and let it hang in a dry place.
The accumulation of moisture from humid air will lead to the appearance of mold on your coats, which not only leave unsightly stains, but it is very unhealthy for you.
During the summer you should also make leather goods storage every two weeks and hang them in a dry air for one or two days, the moisture accumulates inside the cupboards and cause the problems described above.
Everyone will say NO and they are probably right, but it depends on where you live. I live in the desert so there is nothing like the humidity here. Our humidity is about 7% on a sultry day. I keep leather jackets in several plastic bags here, but they are open at the base and breathe properly if it is not a problem for ME!
HOWEVER, if you live in an area of moisture, you may want to consider other methods. I have read some of the first question before I whisked away to the response area, but it may be good method to YOUR area.
As seen on TV may have bags that allow you to remove the air with a vacuum cleaner hose. As long as there is no air and you put something in the bag will absorb moisture, like all these little things in bottles of vitamins you about eating when they are weak. Sprinkle a little of those in an airtight bag and remove the air and I suppose you would have a good method.
For the absolute best method of storage I would like to contact a cleaning service that specializes in leather and ask them what they recommend. At least that way you always have someone to blame if mold. (Sorry ... I'm in the U.S. litigation and the first thing we always consider is WHO can we blame and we can prosecute them if the outcome is not great .. . since nothing is our fault ... God forbid.)
