Drapery Making Supplies

Posted on May 27, 2010.
Drapery Making SuppliesIs it very involved to learn to sew on a machine?

I'm getting frustrated trying to find curtains I (I always prefer tricky, single rather than run-of-factory l'usine things). And I think trying to learn to sew - to borrow an old machine and perhaps try to make drapery panels as a first project.
Good or bad idea? Any suggestions, good sites for learning? Supplies? Fabric? Thank you! :)

Want to learn two things:

How to use a sewing machine and
How draperies, curtains.

Do not borrow a sewing machine unless the owner shows you how to use and can provide an instruction manual for using the machine.

To make curtains or drapes, you must calculate the amount of fabric needed -

"Related Articles" near the bottom of the link will provide the necessary tools and easy to follow instructions for cutting and sewing.

Choose the right needle sewing machine according to the type of fabric you will use. Here is an overview of the right needle corresponding to the structure -

It is not difficult. Curtains would be mostly straight seam. It is sometimes cheaper to buy curtains rather than making them. You can get curtains and do a little painting, stamping on them to make them more interesting - like curtains beige with gold foil stamped on them, or pale green curtains with dark green leaves. There are lots of stamps to choose the craft shop.

Your choice of a first sewing project is good because it's all straight lines, however, the thickness of the fabric could be a problem. However, the most important thing to learn when you take this machine is to learn how to thread it properly - and make the adjustments you might need blood. The fabric can be very expensive if the seam is not always a money saving venture - but you might be able to obtain appropriate tissue on a good sale or redo some drapery panels from what you find a garage sale or Thrift Store? Another option is to buy already made panels and add your personal touch to them - a band of contrasting material or appliqueds or, as mentioned, the stamping.

Look for permanent press, washable. I guess you can get all kinds of online sewing tutorials. Of course, if you bought a machine, you often get lessons included depending on where you buy it. The stitching is great fun - have at it! And keep your fingers away from the needle:)

Curtains would be an excellent first project. If you have a friend or relative who has a machine, you could probably get a pair of curtains made in an afternoon (depending on the design of the curtains). Learn to sew on a machine is very easy, especially if you have a single machine. If you are a crafty person, you'll probably really appreciate it! There are many excellent models available curtain and you can often find fabrics for interior design on sale for 50% discount. I just found jandofabrics.com and have fallen in love with their selection! They have novelty fabrics REALLY fun too! Good luck!

It is not difficult, but not to borrow an old machine unless the owner has with him, to help you learn to use it. Sewing machines need to be listening to the professionals each year or they have problems and you will not be able to understand why.

A new machine is usually less than a hundred dollars at Wally World. Before use, a wizard to close or check in a lot of vid.
