Cellar ManagementSelection of management software wine cellar - Part I

So you're the proud owner of a wine cellar, or seriously thinking about getting one. Curious, software can help me manage it? The answer is definitely yes. Yes, if your basement is really just a couple of bottles of wine, not necessarily in the basement. And yes, when you have an operation several thousand bottles intended to drive your friends and neighbors wild with desire as far as to classify and protect your collection. Yes, wine cellar software can help you manage and protect your collection. But you must spend time and efforts to determine what software wine cellar best meets your needs, wherever you spend time and effort selecting your wines.

Before proposing our ideas on what to look for in the software wine cellar, a few general comments are in order. We will not give names. We do not intend to provide advertising for a wine cellar software. As always, make sure you can return the software within a reasonable time, often 30 days for a full refund or a full refund less the costs of handling small. Recently, we were interested in some software that has nothing to do with caves. The manufacturer offered no guarantee of repayment, but does allow us to download a free trial version. This version lasted only three days and a lot of potentially interesting features have been disabled. I would never buy such software and highly recommend that you do not. Remember, the promised features are meaningless when you visit them. No salesman ever told you about the shortcomings of their software. Have you ever heard of software that has not been presented as easy to use?

Data entry is an important aspect of the ability of software for you. If you are going to type away, you may lose interest quickly. Many programs require you to enter basic information such as the grape variety, brand, country, region, vintage. Great, how can they manage several varieties such as often in red wines of Bordeaux? Many wines have two "brands" associated with them. If you're enough of a wine lover to have a wine cellar, you may be interested in these details. Whether you're interested enough to bash in whatever additional information is to you. Some wines, like most Champagne, not a vintage. Does the system forces you to make a value? It is so easy not to enter optional data, but then the system value decreases exponentially. For example, suppose your database does not include the vintage Chateau Petrus your. The software will not be able to provide the best time to drink date.

There are other problems associated with data entry. How does the system manage multiple purchases? In other words, you liked a particular Barolo that you end up buying a case, lucky you. The program allows you to add that the modified data, such as price, or do you have to start virtually from scratch? Some systems allow you to enter data from the barcode. Although this option is useful, you might need data not found on the barcode. Thus, you can expect to spend time and effort into denigration of data. You may know the phrase, Garbage In Garbage Out. A good system of flags scandalous input values of data, but can not catch all your mistakes.

If you are rich enough to have a good wine cellar, you might consider paying someone to do serious data entry for you. Make sure that his nickname is Butterfingers.
